UNITS
I'm an ex science teacher - so I'm very fussy about units. Examiners would deduct all the marks if units were not stated correctly.
The top sign is in Catalunya. I don't know what N stands for - Nots?
The bottom sign is in Tameside. Lower case m stands for metre - so I hope nobody thinks it's only 1metre to the WC.

The nautical sign seems to be getting at the idea of a no-wake zone. So a speed limit of 3 nautical miles per hour is reasonable.
ReplyDeleteWhat is wrong is the conversion to km/hour. In round numbers it would be 5, not 2.

ReplyDeleteIt took me a minute to work that out.
I thought a no-wake zone meant you were asleep.
With your naval experience I'm sure you calculated correctly.
Could it mean that the limit applies over a distance of 2km?
Aha, you are correct! No wake for 2 km.
ReplyDeleteThat's why you're the teacher and I'm the student.
Do I have detention now?
It was just a thought - glad you think I'm right.
ReplyDeleteDetention - any time you like.
It's voluntary ;)
isn't that m stands for Miles?
ReplyDeleteThe people who wrote this sign used it to mean miles.
ReplyDeleteBut it really stands for metres.
I have no idea what the abbreviation for miles is.

ReplyDeleteI saw another old sign today which referred to nudos.
I Googled it and it is the Spanish word for knots.
So you were correct!!
Why was I not informed about this blog earlier?
ReplyDeleteDid I miss a post?
Wasn't I paying attention?
Is there c**e?

ReplyDeleteWelcome - I'm trying to keep this blog separate (lots of duplication) but I keep forgetting in the comments box (d'oh).
I promise to get cake soon and you will be the first to know.
