UNITS

I'm an ex science teacher - so I'm very fussy about units. Examiners would deduct all the marks if units were not stated correctly.

The top sign is in Catalunya. I don't know what N stands for - Nots?

The bottom sign is in Tameside. Lower case m stands for metre - so I hope nobody thinks it's only 1metre to the WC.

  1. The nautical sign seems to be getting at the idea of a no-wake zone. So a speed limit of 3 nautical miles per hour is reasonable.

What is wrong is the conversion to km/hour. In round numbers it would be 5, not 2.

It took me a minute to work that out.
I thought a no-wake zone meant you were asleep.
With your naval experience I'm sure you calculated correctly.
Could it mean that the limit applies over a distance of 2km?

  3. Aha, you are correct! No wake for 2 km.

That's why you're the teacher and I'm the student.

    Do I have detention now?

  6. The people who wrote this sign used it to mean miles.
But it really stands for metres.
I have no idea what the abbreviation for miles is.

I saw another old sign today which referred to nudos.
I Googled it and it is the Spanish word for knots.
    So you were correct!!
